11th Annual Wounded Warriors Weekend Reports

On Friday, February 6, 2015, Wintergreen Adaptive Sports welcomed 34 wounded warrior athletes and additional 60 family members and caregivers for an exciting weekend of adaptive snow sports instruction, rest and relaxation, and camaraderie.

..."January 29th in 2004, I was wounded near Balad, Iraq,"said Matthew Staton, a wounded warrior and ski instructor. "I had gunshot wounds directly to the left hip, major damage to my left thigh and femoral bone, and bruising across the chest where the plates stopped the other bullets."

Many of the wounded warriors said the adaptive sports is a way to turn a new leaf on their life, some of them like Matthew Staton, even mastering the sport enough to teach fellow wounded warriors.

"It's kind of almost relaxing to them in a way, because they are not having to in a short sense, explain themselves of what they're been through, they know I've seen it and been there so we get right to the skiing," Staton said.

"Being in the military, there is an instant trust there, when they're going down the hill and we're going behind them, making sure they're doing the right thing and that nobody is going to run into them or anything like that, they know we have their sticks so it's always comforting," said Tim Payne, a wounded warrior and ski instructor.... READ THE ARTICLE HERE

WAS Race Team Picks Up Five Medals at the Camel Back Ski Resort in Tannersville, PA

Seth Whitten, Emma Shreve, and Jason Coleman earned gold medals in the men's senior standing, the women's standing, and the men's sitting divisions, while WAS racers Michael Murphy and Keith Gaskell earned silver and bronze medals in the men's sitting division.

On Saturday, February 8, 2014 five members of the Wintergreen Adaptive Sports Ski Race Team competed in the Diana Golden Alpine Ski Race Series event held at the Pocono Mountains Camel Back Ski Resort. 

Team members Seth Whitten, Emma Shreve, and Jason Coleman earned gold medals in the men's senior standing, the women's standing, and the men's sitting divisions, while WAS racers Michael Murphy and Keith Gaskell earned silver and bronze medals in the men's sitting division.

Tenth Annual WAS Warriors Weekend

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports held its 10th annual Warriors Weekend of exciting snow sports, camaraderie, and rest and relaxation for our honored wounded warrior guests and their families. WAS hosted 32 warriors and an additional 40 family members for three days.

With memory loss and permanent nerve damage to his shoulder and arm, Chadd Jackson visited a similar event with his family after being discharged from the hospital five years ago.

He had skied as a kid, having been born in Colorado, where he still has family, but his injuries had undermined his balance.

WAS Selected as the Region's Best Adaptive Snow Sports Program

The January 2014 Washingtonian showcased the region's best snow sports places and opportunities. Wintergreen Adaptive Sports was selected as the region's best adaptive snow sports program.

Founded in 1984, Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, which works with the Wounded Warrior Project, brings skiing and snowboarding to the physically and mentally challenged. Each skier is provided with customized equipment, such as a sit-down ski sled, and specialized assistance from some 100 volunteer instructors.
