12th annual Wounded Warriors Weekend–February 5-7, 2016

In the tradition of this always exciting weekend, Wintergreen Adaptive Sports will provide–at no cost to our honored guests–welcome bags, snacks, nourishing meals, all lift tickets and equipment, all housing accommodations, and ski or snowboard lessons for not only those being honored, but all spouses and children as well. Special children's activities are also planned. WAS is especially grateful for the housing accommodations provided by over thirty Wintergreen resort resident families.

Our 12th annual Wounded Warriors Weekend will be February 5–7.

Everyone at Wintergreen Adaptive Sports, and the entire Wintergreen community, eagerly anticipates this event as soon as the snow starts flying each winter. It is a weekend built around finding new possibilities, setting new limits, and providing lots of time for pure fun–and relaxation,–for our honored warrior guests and their families.

Following a full day of snow sports on Saturday, February 6th, we'll convene in the evening for our annual Wounded Warriors banquet to salute the warriors and their families, the WAS and Wintergreen Resort staff, and for the many community volunteers who assist us on this weekend. Without the generosity of and collaboration among these groups and individuals, it would be impossible to hold this special event.

We welcome both donations and helping hands. If you'd like to contribute to this year’s weekend of appreciation for the brave men and women, injured in the line of duty, or would like information on the event, please send us an email to info@skiwas.org.

For our Wounded Warrior weekend, and for our "Everyday is Warrior Day" program, all wounded warriors are welcome to this event.

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports defines a Wounded Warrior as a service member (veteran or active duty) who has a disability that either resulted from wounds, injury, or disease received in the line of duty as a direct result of armed conflict; or was caused by an instrumentality of war and was incurred in the line of duty.

If there is limited space due to instructor availability, priority will be given to those injured after 2001 in overseas combat, those injured while directly engaged in armed conflict, and those who are attending their first event or are "never-ever" skiers and riders.

Wintergreen Adaptive Sports encourages our wounded warrior students to include their families in the Wounded Warrior Weekend. All spouses, partners, children, and caregivers will receive the same complimentary accommodations as our wounded warrior students.

For additional information on our Wounded Warrior program, contact us at info@skiwas.org.

Wintergreen Hosts Wounded Warrior Weekend

From the CBS 19 Newsplex:

..."January 29th in 2004, I was wounded near Balad, Iraq,"said Matthew Staton, a wounded warrior and ski instructor. "I had gunshot wounds directly to the left hip, major damage to my left thigh and femoral bone, and bruising across the chest where the plates stopped the other bullets."

Many of the wounded warriors said the adaptive sports is a way to turn a new leaf on their life, some of them like Matthew Staton, even mastering the sport enough to teach fellow wounded warriors.

"It's kind of almost relaxing to them in a way, because they are not having to in a short sense, explain themselves of what they're been through, they know I've seen it and been there so we get right to the skiing," Staton said.

"Being in the military, there is an instant trust there, when they're going down the hill and we're going behind them, making sure they're doing the right thing and that nobody is going to run into them or anything like that, they know we have their sticks so it's always comforting," said Tim Payne, a wounded warrior and ski instructor.... READ THE ARTICLE HERE

With memory loss and permanent nerve damage to his shoulder and arm, Chadd Jackson visited a similar event with his family after being discharged from the hospital five years ago.

He had skied as a kid, having been born in Colorado, where he still has family, but his injuries had undermined his balance.

“With all the nerve damage to the shoulder, the arm, I couldn’t see myself doing it,” he said. READ THE ARTICLE IN THE NEWS & ADVANCE HERE
